Thomas Jefferson High School and its campus has been designated “The Heart of the Neighborhood” in connection with the West Broadway beautification project. The Iowa West Foundation is funding the campus renovation project which began last June and will be completed this summer.
The East entrance to the school, including concrete work, has been totally redone. Iron benches adorn the larger and more attractive entrance to the building. The War Memorial and original fountain are currently being renovated. Concrete work continues across the Broadway boundary and centers on the War Memorial fountain.
To “open-up” the public view of the building’s beautiful architecture, many trees were moved to other locations on campus. The marquee will be updated to provide a digital “reader board” to publicize events and activities.
As a part of the beautification project, a brick monument, similar to those found at other Council Bluffs locations, such as the entrances to Locust Lodge and Oakland Avenue, has been constructed.
The final phase of the T.J. project focuses on the west side of the building with an elliptical sidewalk, a covered pergola and benches. The center of the elliptical sidewalk features a rock “Spirit Circle” which has been constructed to accommodate homecoming bonfires.
Extensive landscaping will be completed to continue the beautification of the campus. Once completed, the T.J. campus will be a wonderful showcase of community and school pride.
